History. 101 Squadron is Israel's first fighter squadron, formed on May 20, 1948, six days after Israel declared its independence. Lacking the nimbleness and control of its predecessor, the Avia S-199 was not popular with the Czech pilots, resulting in its nickname Mezek (Mule). Nevertheless, the S-199 served until 1957 with the Czech pilots liked the Avia S-199, nicknamed "The Mule". The Mule was powered by the Junkers Jumo 211F 12-cylinder liquid cooled engine, married to a large three-bladed wooden propeller, intended for the Heinkel He-111H bomber.
