The original package is very dated but still playable and incredibly iconic. Playing Black Mesa after can then show how amazing that improved upon everything. If you just wanted to play Black Mesa, then it's still an amazing recreation of the original plus you can then try Half Life 2 which still holds up today superbly. Some of the mods in the latter category even became so big that they were later developed into full game releases. If players want a solid modding experience, Half-Life 2 is one to try.
